Events...La Traviata... Saturday 8th October 2011 Making another appearance as Violetta, Demelza will be singing at Shire Hall in Chelmsford. The opera will be performed with orchestra in English translation. It is one of the most stunning operas with incredible music and a heart breaking story, this is a perfect opera for anyone looking to see their first opera. Violetta is a Parisian Courtesan hiding within the madness of her party lifestyle from the knowledge that she is dying from consumption. Then one night her world is shaken by the realisation that someone truly loves her and despite her fear, she decides to leave the world she knows behind. She and Alfredo move to the country together and live in love and happiness until his father arrives and begs Violetta to give up his son. Their relationship has brought Alfredo's family into disrepute and his younger sister cannot marry whilst her brother lives with a courtesan and so Violetta agrees to sacrifice her happiness to help their family. Violetta flees to Paris and attends a party on the arm of Baron Duphol and when the heartbroken Alfredo chases after her, he believes she has left him simply to be with the wealthy Baron. Furious, he calls their friends to witness as he throws his money at her to 'pay for the services he has received'. Violetta is then seen months later, praying that she will see Alfredo again. She rereads a letter his father has sent promising that Alfredo now knows the truth and will return to beg her forgiveness. He finally arrives but Violetta cannot recover her strength and dies in his arms. Links | |||
